BioLego-294 viewsA true bug specimen was fixed and dehydrated before being critical point dried and sputter coated with 15nm gold. Backscattered electron imaging at 30kV in a Hitachi environmental SEM S3400 was used to capture the image of the insectís compound eye. The image was converted to RGB format and a color wash applied. The eye was then colored by hand. Gradients were applied across the eye and the whole image. The background was selected and subtle color washes applied to lighten it from black. Finally a lighting effect was selected.

Into the light-277 viewsAn ant was fixed in formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde, dehydrated in acetone, critical point dried and sputter coated in approx. 40nm gold. The antís abdomen containing a breathing hole called a spiracle was imaged using backscattered electron imaging at 30kV in a Hitachi environmental SEM S3400. The image was converted to RGB format. Parts of the image were hand colored. Hue, saturation, brightness and contrast were adjusted to get the correct balance of colors and effects. The image was inverted, giving the impression of looking towards a light source and a watercolor effect across the rest of the image.

Nanofronds-241 viewsCommon mosquito/gnat was dehydrated, critical point dried and sputter coated with gold. The antenna was imaged using backscattered electron imaging at 30kV in a Hitachi environmental SEM S3400. The image was converted to RGB format and a color wash applied. Select parts of the image was colored by hand. Color gradients were applied to the image and hue, saturation, contrast and brightness were adjusted. The image was inverted and additional color washes applied to create a watercolor effect. The image almost looks like underwater plant life with fronds trailing through the current.

Backscattered electron imaging at 30kV in a Hitachi environmental SEM S3400 was used to capture the image of the insectís abdomen. The image was converted to RGB format and a color wash applied. The hairs were then colored by hand. Gradients were applied across the image and specific selections. Finally, a lighting effect was used.
