The addition of gold and silver powder to the glass made the vase reflect many various colors. The colors were mostly orange, red, metallic, lilac and purple, depending on the size of the gold or silver nanoparticles. Nanotechnology was also utilized throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Gold and silver salts were generally used to color the glass used for church windows. Silver particles produced a yellow coloring to the glass while gold particles imparted red coloring.
