The image was obtained in black and white and colored by an editor.
Contained in a vacuum, electron microscopy utilizes an illumination system which produces a beam of high energy electrons that are reflected off the target and are received by a scintillation tube and interpreted to produce greatly expanded images (up to a million times). Previously, targets could only be magnified 2000 times with a standard light microscope. Overcoming this barrier provided a launching pad for nanometric research.
