Nanomedusas Party
The artwork shows a sample of hematite particles in a peculiar "nanomedusa" morphology. The "hairy" particles consist of a spherical-like core of about 100 nanometers in diameter and fibrous exterior composed of thin "legs" of 5 nanometers in diameter grown along one preferential direction. Each particle represents a nanodimensional "hairy" ferromagnet in a very broad temperature interval, extending much above the room tempetrature. Such high-temperature ferromagnetic nanoparticles are not frequently found among nanomaterials. The original SEM image was artistically altered using various computer tools.
My thanks go to Dr. Janez Dolinsek from the Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia, who kindly provided me with the SEM image.
