Rainbows in the Nano Cosmos
This image was taken with the forescatter electron diodes of a Bruker EBSD detector inside a Tescan Lyra 3 FIB/SEM. Normally, these diodes detect differences in Kikuchi patterns from crystalline material to determine different crystal orientations. In this case the sample consists of silicon nanopillars with a diameter of 600nm. Depending on the position of the electron beam behind a pillar, one or two of the three RGB-coded diodes is shaded and the resulting signal becomes so colorful. This image was not altered by software afterwards.
